Frequently Asked Questions
What Style of Therapy do You Use?
As you may know there are various styles of therapy that are available. I have found that clients benefit the most from practicing techniques that can be applied to evolving episodes and situations throughout their lives.
For example, we focus on practicing techniques from Person-Centered-Therapy. The first step in this well researched modality is Reflecting Content where clients learn to improve understanding of the actual problem. Do you ever find yourselves arguing about exactly what is the problem or what is wrong here? First we need to work on that, so at least we can understand clearly, non-defensively, non-judgmentally what is the problem.
Another important initial technique is Emotionally Focused Communication. This means basically that I learn to communicate about my emotional state without causing an argument.
As human beings we have so many emotions that trouble us, and we may often develop destructive ways of expressing and coping with our feelings, wants and needs. Implementing emotionally focused communication is worth the effort, and may take some practice... Clients find it to be a great relief when they learn how to start to tell the truth and not cause an argument in the process.
